Innovation was as central to KONGSBERG in the 19th century as it is in the 21st. In 1892 our pioneering spirit achieved international recognition thanks to the Krag-Jørgensen rifle.
The Krag-Jørgensen won a competition against 53 other rifle models, from manufacturers around the world, to be the US Army’s new weapon of choice. Impressed by KONGSBERG’s technology leadership and craftsmanship, the US Army adopted the rifle as its lead weapon for nine years, during which time 500,000 were produced in the US alone.
The Krag-Jørgensen was a clear demonstration of our ever-growing focus on technology and fine craftsmanship. It stood out from competing weapons of the time due to a revolutionary magazine, allowing for faster loading times. ‘The Krag’ became Norway’s first large-scale industrial export and helped establish an important relationship with the US Armed Forces that still endures today.
